In early October I was privileged to travel to Pretoria to provide Co-operative Learning, Phonics and reading training using the Roots programme to a team of teachers at Zamintuthuko Primary School. This is the first school in a project set up by Dr Surette Van Staden of Pretoria University. The aim is to show that SFA can be successfully used to support learning in the challenging context of township schools in South Africa. Zamintuthuko is located in the township of Mamelodi, on the outskirts of Pretoria. The main African language taught is Zulu, although children also learn English and are expected to learn exclusively through English from Grade 4, when they are 10 years old.
